Artist Workshop - Sheila Ghelani

Writer: Estelle HomerstoneEstelle Homerstone

This workshop began with the group connecting with each other by sharing things we may not know about one another:

- We rotated in pairs around the group having casual conversations about specific elements of our personality that present information about us and our individuality

- A conversation that played on my mind from this was one I had with someone about my Vans shoes

- After the conversation I wrote this in response -

"I have these types of Vans in two different colours, and they are the third identical pair of these that I have purchased. They go with everything and I feel like they have become a part of my stylistic aesthetic / brand"

I find it interesting how we feel like we have to qualify any positive comment we make about ourselves so as to not seem vain or narcissistic.

We then were asked to visualise the room in which our project exists within, thinking about the look of it, the style, the furniture, the materials and the general ambience of the room. This was the result of my though into this:

"My living room is full of band equipment, bookcases of autobiographies and clothing. There are two clothing rails, one full of extravagant jackets and coats, and the other opposite this on the other side of the room, full of different shades and styles of denim. There are black smooth walls all around, apart from one feature wall full of female portraits and framed book covers of female literary writers and female novel characters. The only seating available is a piano stool, a drum stool and a tall wooden backless stool"

Whilst mentally situating ourselves within these rooms, we wrote a list of the 'because' reasons that we wanted to make our piece, and why we should do it. Mine was as follows:

"BECAUSE THE VOICES NEED TO BE RECLAIMED
BECAUSE IT'S WHO I AM
BECAUSE I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
BECAUSE I CAN MAKE
BECAUSE I CAN
BECAUSE IT IS PART OF ME
BECAUSE IT IS PART OF ME I WANT
BECAUSE IT IS PART OF ME I WANT TO EXPLORE
BECAUSE IT IS RELEVANT
BECAUSE IT IS DANGEROUS
BECAUSE I HAVE LESS TO LOSE
BECAUSE I KNOW HOW TO USE MYSELF TO MAKE THE STATEMENT
BECAUSE I CAN START THE CONVERSATION
BECAUSE I CAN DO IT
BECAUSE I CAN"
